Yang Family Historical Residence, Historical residence in Nanzih District, Taiwan

The Yang Family Historical Residence is a traditional dwelling in Nanzih featuring a Sanheyuan design with three separate building clusters, a central reception hall, and five rooms in each outer wing. The structure demonstrates southern Chinese construction methods and was built entirely using locally sourced materials and techniques.

The Yang family migrated from Fujian during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty and constructed this residence in 1882. The construction reflected a broader wave of southern Chinese families establishing new settlements across Taiwan during that period.

The residence displays southern Chinese architectural elements through its central courtyard layout, which reflects how family members stayed connected in traditional Taiwanese households. Visitors can see how the rooms and spaces were arranged to support multiple generations living and working together.

The residence is located near the Oil Refinery Elementary School Station on the Kaohsiung MRT and is easily accessible by public transportation. The site is fully walkable and provides enough space to explore the different sections at a comfortable pace.

The building preserves original furnishings and decorative elements that reveal how a prominent Taiwanese family arranged their daily domestic life during the late 1800s. Many of these objects remain visible today, giving visitors a tangible sense of how the household functioned.
