Liuchuan Canal, Canal in Central District, Taichung, Taiwan.
The Liuchuan Canal is a waterway stretching about 6 kilometers through Taichung, lined with walking paths on either side. The system includes water treatment facilities that help maintain the water quality flowing through it.
The waterway was designed during the Japanese colonial period from 1895 to 1945 to mirror river systems found in Kyoto. It later became an important part of Taichung's urban development and infrastructure.
The waterway serves as a gathering place where locals walk, jog, and relax along its banks. The planted vegetation creates a green space in the city where residents naturally spend their free time and connect with neighbors.
Visit in early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and fewer people are around. The walking paths run smoothly along both banks, making it easy to move at your own pace through the area.
The canal received official recognition in 2018 as Taiwan's first trademarked waterway system. This distinction followed an extensive restoration that completely renewed how the waterway looked and functioned.
