Kinmen Bridge, Concrete bridge in Jinning Township, Taiwan
The Kinmen Bridge runs across 5.4 kilometers (3.4 miles) of water and links Greater Kinmen to Lieyu through a system of five support towers. The reinforced concrete structure forms a gentle arc over the strait, following the currents and depths between both islands.
Planning started in 2010, construction began in 2013 and reached completion in October 2022 after several delays. Before that, only ferries carried people and goods back and forth between the islands.
The structure brings both communities closer by reducing the journey between islands to just a few minutes where boats once were the only option. Locals use it for their daily commute to work, school or the market.
The roadway offers two lanes for cars plus separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists across its 15-meter (49-foot) width. On windy days the crossing can feel breezy with gusts coming off the sea, especially for cyclists.
The construction required special methods because of the currents and changing wind conditions in the channel between the islands. The five towers distribute the weight evenly and leave enough clearance for vessels passing underneath.
