Juguang Tower, Military memorial tower in Jincheng Township, Taiwan.
Juguang Tower is a three-story building in a traditional Chinese architectural style, set on a small hill in Jincheng Township on Kinmen Island, Taiwan. Inside, it holds a gallery with documents and artifacts, and the top floor opens onto an outdoor viewing area facing the sea.
The tower was built in 1953 to honor the soldiers who died during the 1949 Battle of Guningtou, when Kinmen successfully repelled an attack from the mainland. The island remained a front-line military position for decades after, and the tower was one of the first public monuments built there.
The name Juguang means "radiant light" in Chinese, a choice that reflects hopes tied to this contested stretch of sea. At the entrance, two decorative cannons greet visitors as a reminder of the military past that still shapes how people here think about the island.
The tower sits on a maintained ground in central Jincheng and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Climbing to the top takes only a few minutes, but clear weather makes the view from the top much more rewarding.
On a clear day, the Chinese mainland coast is visible from the top with the naked eye, as it lies only a few miles (roughly 10 kilometers) away from Kinmen. Few memorial sites in the world place a visitor this close to a still-active geopolitical boundary.
