Chen Shi-yin Western Style House, Historical residence in Jincheng Township, Taiwan.
The Chen Shi-yin Western Style House is a two-story residence in Jincheng Township with tall windows and ornate carvings on its facades. The rooms are openly arranged and display furnishings and decorations from the merchant era of the early 1900s.
The house was built in 1917 by entrepreneur Chen Jing-lan after he became wealthy from business ventures in Singapore. During World War II, the building served as a military hospital.
The residence blends Eastern and Western design elements that reflect the trading connections of the early 1900s. Visitors can observe how wealthy merchant families lived and arranged their homes to express their ties to the outside world.
The building now functions as an exhibition space where visitors can explore multiple rooms and discover the architectural history. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the wooden floors can be uneven depending on the season and weather conditions.
The house ranks among the largest Western-style homes on Kinmen Island and stands as a testament to the wealth of merchant families. Its architecture shows how successful businesspeople expressed their prosperity through elaborate homes.
