The protected area spans 23.50 hectares within Compartment 49 of the Da-an River Working Circle, featuring diverse vegetation and mountain landscapes.
The designation of this conservation area in October 2000 marked Taiwan's first dedicated insect protection initiative, focusing on the broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly.
The broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly holds significance in Taiwan's natural heritage, discovered in 1932 along Wumaozih riverside in Yilan County.
The habitat maintains strict conservation regulations to protect the Sassafras randaiense plant species, which serves as the exclusive food source for butterfly larvae.
Female butterflies in this habitat display larger body sizes than males, with wingspans reaching 10 centimeters during their peak activity from April to August.
