Shen'ao Power Plant, Coal power station in Ruifang District, Taiwan
Shen'ao Power Plant was a coal-fired facility in Ruifang District, New Taipei, built along the coast with multiple generating units. The station ceased operation in 2007 and was demolished in 2011, leaving behind the industrial site as a reminder of Taiwan's energy history.
The facility began operations in 1960 as Taiwan's energy needs grew. Expansion proposals in the 2010s were eventually abandoned due to changing national energy priorities.
Local communities engaged in discussions about environmental impacts, leading to protests and petitions that gathered over 482,000 signatures against the plant's expansion.
The site is located along the coast in Ruifang District and is not open to visitors. Visitors can view the area from nearby public roads or elevated viewpoints in the region.
Plans for a NT$108.9 billion reconstruction project with two 800-megawatt units were canceled in 2018 following environmental health studies.
