National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, Maritime and science museum in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
The National Museum of Marine Science and Technology is a maritime museum on the grounds of a former power plant in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan. The exhibition spaces spread across several buildings and show topics such as marine research, shipbuilding and the diversity of the oceans.
The power plant on whose grounds the museum stands was built in 1937 as the first of its kind in Taiwan. After decommissioning and an extensive conversion, the museum opened its doors to the public in 2014.
The name reflects Taiwan's long tradition as an island nation whose inhabitants have lived from the sea for centuries. Visitors see today in the galleries models of ships, nets and tools that show how fishing and trade have shaped the life of coastal communities.
The museum is located near Haikeguan Station and opens Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On weekends, the doors remain open one hour longer, giving visitors more time to explore the exhibitions.
A theater with 3D IMAX technology and a Deep Sea Theater allow visitors to dive into the deep sea without getting wet. The projections show coral reefs, dark trenches and marine life that are otherwise accessible only to divers.
