Guchuan Bridge, Road bridge in Pingtung County, Taiwan
Guchuan Bridge is a 654-meter prestressed concrete structure spanning the Laonong River and connecting the Sandimen and Wutai regions. The bridge rises 99 meters above the riverbed and consists of nine sections with a main span of 140 meters.
This bridge was built after the original Number 1 Bridge from 1972 was destroyed by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. The project emerged as a response to reconnect the Wutai region following the disaster.
The design shows symbols from the Rukai people, with lily flowers and snake patterns woven into the structure. A memorial on the bridge honors those who helped after the disaster.
The bridge has a 10-meter-wide roadway and carries traffic across the valley. It is accessible at any time and offers views across the river valley from various points along the crossing.
The construction employed around 100 workers daily, with most being local indigenous people from the area. This local involvement made the project an important development process for the region.
