Mariupol, Port city in southeastern Ukraine.
Mariupol sits at the confluence of Kalmius and Kalchik rivers, extending along the northern coast of the Sea of Azov with four administrative districts.
The settlement began in 1778 as Pavlovsk on a former Cossack site, receiving its current name in 1779 to honor Maria Fyodorovna of the Russian Empire.
The city developed as a center of metallurgy and maritime trade, with a population representing Ukrainian, Russian, and Greek communities across four distinct neighborhoods.
Before 2022, Mariupol operated as a major industrial center with steel manufacturing facilities, grain export terminals, and connections to the Donets Basin railway network.
The population of Mariupol increased substantially in 1780 when Greek communities from Crimea relocated to the area, establishing new trade connections.
