Ivano-Frankivsk, Regional capital in western Ukraine
The city extends along the Bystritsa River at 244 meters elevation, forming an urban center surrounded by Carpathian foothills and agricultural lands.
Originally named Stanisławów, the settlement started in 1662 as a fortress built by the Polish Potocki family to protect against Crimean and Nogai raids.
The Armenian Church, Cathedral of God's Ascension, and City Hall reflect the architectural influences from Polish, Austrian, and Ukrainian periods of governance.
The central railway station connects the city to major Ukrainian destinations, while multiple universities and medical institutes serve the educational needs of 238,000 residents.
The original city layout was determined by Revera Potocki using a plow in the fields, following Renaissance urban planning principles on the ancient Zabolottia settlement.
