Khortytsia, National park island in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine.
Khortytsia is an island in the Dnieper River that runs about 12 kilometers in length and covers around 23 square kilometers. The terrain shifts between wooded hills, rocky ravines and sandy shorelines along the river.
The island served as the center of the Zaporozhian Sich from the 16th century, a community of armed Cossacks. This semi-autonomous organization lasted until the late 18th century and shaped the region's history.
The Cossack Museum displays reconstructions of living quarters and workshops that show how communities lived during the 16th through 18th centuries. Visitors can see clothing, weapons and everyday objects that give a direct sense of military and craft skills from that time.
Bridges from Zaporizhzhia connect the mainland to the island and link the center with main walking routes. Flat paths and steep trails alternate throughout, so visitors should be ready for varied terrain.
Archaeologists have found traces of settlements across the site that range from the Stone Age through medieval times. These discoveries show that people used the island as a home and refuge over thousands of years.
