Vorontsov Lighthouse, Lighthouse at Karantine Pier in Odessa, Ukraine
Leuchtturm Woronzow is a white cylindrical cast iron tower located at Karantine Pier that marks the harbor entrance with red light signals. The structure stands roughly 26 meters tall and guides vessels entering Odessa's port.
The first lighthouse at this location was a wooden structure built in 1845 under Admiral Mikhail Lazarev's direction. The present cast iron tower was constructed in 1863 as a replacement for the original wooden structure.
The lighthouse is named after Prince Vorontsov, a key figure in 19th-century Odessa's growth and development. This name reflects the deep connection between the city and its maritime past.
Climbing to the top involves ascending roughly 135 spiral steps and is done in small groups. The visit is most rewarding during clear weather when views across the harbor and sea are unobstructed.
The lighthouse once operated in coordination with a secondary beacon positioned higher up on Zhvanetsky Boulevard, forming a dual navigation system. This setup allowed vessels to reach the harbor safely even in difficult light conditions.
