Ukrainian Steppe Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Steppe Nature Reserve consists of four separate sections: Khomutovskyi, Kamiani Mohyly, Kreidova Flora, and Kalmiuske, each protecting a different portion of original grassland. These areas contain varied plant communities and rock formations typical of the natural steppe landscape.
The reserve was established in 1961 to protect remaining sections of the original steppe that once stretched from the Azov Sea to the Black Sea. This protected status preserved the landscape before agricultural expansion transformed the region.
The sandstone rocks here display carvings left by different peoples who once traveled through these grasslands. Visitors can see how these ancient marks tell the story of who lived in this region long ago.
Visiting certain sections requires special permits, though the Stone Tomb historical site and its museum are freely accessible to all visitors. It helps to check ahead which areas are open and wear sturdy shoes since the ground is often uneven.
The reserve supports 14 different species of feather grass adapted to thrive in these dry steppe conditions. These rare grasses are a key reason why this location was chosen for protection.
