Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theatre, théâtre située à Kharkiv, Ukraine
The Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theatre is a Ukrainian-language playhouse on Sumska Street 9, one of the main streets of the city. It has two stages: a large main hall and a smaller chamber stage called the Berezil, used for more intimate productions.
The theatre was founded in 1935, after the Berezil Theatre, led by director Les Kurbas, was forcibly shut down by Soviet authorities. The new company took over some of the former ensemble and continued performing under state oversight.
The theatre is named after the poet Taras Shevchenko, a figure deeply tied to Ukrainian literary identity. Productions here are performed in Ukrainian, and the programme mixes classical plays with works by contemporary Ukrainian authors.
The theatre sits on Sumska Street, a central and easy to navigate road in Kharkiv, making it straightforward to reach on foot or by public transport. Checking the programme in advance is a good idea, as the schedule varies by season.
In the early 2000s, director Andriy Zholdak brought the company to stages in Germany, France, and Finland, giving it a rare international profile for a Ukrainian regional theatre. In 2004, a group of UNESCO art critics named the ensemble among the best in Europe.
