Kostrzyca, Mountain peak in Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine
Kostrzyca is a mountain peak in the Carpathians that reaches 1586 meters high. Dense forests cover the slopes and provide views across the Chornohora range and surrounding peaks.
The mountain took its name from a rare grass species, Festuca saxatilis, that grows on the slopes between 1400 and 1800 meters. This distinctive plant has long defined the peak's botanical identity.
Local shepherds practice traditional Hutsul customs on the slopes, using mountain huts called kolyba to produce cheese and dairy products. These methods shape how the landscape is used and maintained.
The main trail starts at Kryvopilja Pass at 970 meters elevation and covers roughly 19 kilometers. This is a demanding hike that takes one to two days to complete as a round trip.
Ancient mossy forests line the paths and allow hikers to forage for wild mushrooms and berries as they climb. This abundance of wild plants makes the ascent a genuine nature experience.
