This museum displays traditional tools, equipment, and mechanisms that were used for logging and transporting timber in the mountain region. The collection documents the complex system of dams, channels, and control devices needed to move logs downriver to lowland settlements.
The structure was built in 1868 as a hydroelectric installation by Austrian engineer Klaus and served timber transport along the Black River for over a century. It was shut down in 1954 as modern transportation methods replaced river-based timber delivery.
The collection honors the craft of forest workers who guided timber rafts down mountain rivers in the Carpathians, creating a crucial transport network for the region. Visitors today can see how this work shaped daily life and the economy of these mountain communities.
The museum is located inside Synevyr National Nature Park and can be reached by bus from Volovets railway station or by car through mountain roads. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and uneven terrain, particularly when wet.
The wooden dam structure preserves original mechanisms for controlling water flow, making it one of only two such preserved timber systems in the world. The simplicity and effectiveness of this historical water engineering demonstrates the skill of local builders before modern machinery existed.
