Dzharylhach lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Dzharylhach Island, Ukraine
Dzharylhach lighthouse is a steel lattice tower standing on the largest uninhabited island in Ukraine, in the Black Sea. The tower rises high enough to be spotted from the water at a good distance, and it still works as a navigation aid for vessels passing along the southern Ukrainian coast.
The tower was built in 1902 to help ships navigate safely along the Ukrainian southern coast. It remained in service throughout the 20th century, even as political control over the region changed more than once.
The lighthouse appears on maritime charts as a reference point for fishermen and sailors who have worked these waters for generations. Visiting the island, you can often spot fishing boats anchored nearby, a reminder of the long connection between the people of this coast and the Black Sea.
The island is only reachable by boat, and the crossing depends heavily on weather conditions and local boat availability. Summer is the best time to visit, when conditions are more stable and boat trips are more frequent.
The steel lattice structure of the tower closely resembles the framework of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, even though the two were built at roughly the same time on opposite sides of Europe. This construction style was very rare for lighthouses of that era, making it one of the few examples of its kind on the Black Sea coast.
