Swan Islands Nature Reserve, Protected nature reserve in Karkinitsky Gulf of Black Sea, Ukraine.
The Swan Islands Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Karkinitsky Gulf along the Black Sea and consists of six small islands with surrounding marine habitat. The site contains shallow waters and coastal zones that serve as refuge and breeding grounds for many bird species.
The area was scientifically studied in the 19th century and formally established as a nature reserve in 1949. Protection measures arose from the need to preserve breeding and resting grounds for migratory waterfowl.
The reserve maintains records of 255 bird species, with 39 listed in the Russian Federation Red Book and 14 in the International Red Book.
Access is heavily restricted and requires prior permission, as the site mainly serves protection and scientific research purposes. You should check in advance what activities are allowed.
The shallow waters surrounding the islands extend for 30 kilometers, creating specific conditions for waterfowl nesting and winter congregation.
