Tsukrovariv, Former industrial settlement in Kirovohrad Oblast, Ukraine
Tsukrovariv is a former industrial settlement in Kirovohrad Oblast that spreads across rural land with abandoned factory buildings and scattered residential structures. The layout shows the typical Soviet pattern of production facilities with housing quarters arranged around them.
The settlement began in the 1980s during Soviet times as a center for sugar and confectionery production with modern factory operations. Following the Soviet collapse and the decline of these industries, the factories closed in the early 2000s.
The name comes from Ukrainian words meaning sugar production, showing how the settlement was built around food processing industries. You can still see this heritage in the abandoned factory buildings that remain throughout the area.
Getting there takes about 106 kilometers from Kropyvnytskyi by driving the E50 or M12 highway through rural terrain. Visitors should know that basic services are limited and it is wise to check road conditions and local circumstances before making the trip.
The settlement shrank from thousands of residents during its peak to around 100 people today, making it a striking example of how Soviet industrial centers collapsed. This dramatic change becomes visible when you drive through and see empty residential blocks next to a handful of occupied homes.
