Hatfield, Commercial and residential town in Hertfordshire, England
Hatfield is a town in the county of Hertfordshire in England, located within Welwyn Hatfield and designated as a New Town. Residential areas from the 1950s and 1960s shape much of the urban layout, while the historic Hatfield House estate sits in the southern part.
The settlement developed from a Saxon village into a market centre during the medieval period. Designation as a New Town after World War Two brought extensive housing projects to accommodate families from the capital.
The town centre displays typical postwar British planning with pedestrian zones and low-rise commercial buildings. Weekly markets and local shops provide insights into the everyday life of residents and their surroundings.
Railway stations and bus stops serve the town for travellers heading to London or surrounding communities. Shopping facilities and parking areas are found in the centre and along main roads.
The de Havilland aircraft factory built the first commercial jet airliner here. The plant also produced the Mosquito bomber, used in World War Two and known for its wooden construction.
