10 Holloway Circus, Postmodern skyscraper in Birmingham, United Kingdom
10 Holloway Circus is a tower in Birmingham with a glass facade marked by vertical stripe patterns running up its 39 floors. The building mixes residential apartments with hotel space, bringing different uses together under one roof.
The project began in 2003 under architect Ian Simpson's direction and was shaped by post-2001 safety regulations. The construction shows how world events influenced the development of new buildings in British cities.
The name Holloway Circus comes from a Victorian-era circus venue that once stood here. Today the building shapes the city's appearance and shows how modern structures can connect to the places they replace.
The building can be entered from street level, though visitors mainly access it through the hotel entrance. The lower levels are easier to reach than the residential areas located higher up in the structure.
The tower placed eighth in the 2006 Emporis Skyscraper Awards, an international recognition for architectural design. This award brought the building into the conversation about important towers around the world.
