Park51, Islamic community center in Lower Manhattan, US.
Park51 is a proposed building complex at Park Place in Lower Manhattan situated between Church Street and West Broadway. The project includes residential space and cultural facilities on a site covering approximately 4,000 square meters.
The original structure on the site dates from the 1850s and was damaged by debris from events in September 2001. The need to rebuild prompted a complete reimagining of how the space would be used going forward.
The center provides space where people of different faiths and backgrounds gather together in Lower Manhattan. Visitors can participate in programs that bring neighbors together to learn from one another and share experiences.
The location has good public transit access with subway lines 2 and 3 stopping at Park Place station and lines A, C, and E at Chambers Street station. Visitors can plan to use these connections to explore the surrounding neighborhood and nearby attractions.
The original project was planned as a 13-story Islamic center but was later redesigned into a much larger complex. The revised plan includes a 70-story residential tower and a 43-story building that will house a museum.
