Carter County, County seat of northeastern Tennessee, United States

Carter County spans 348 square miles across the Blue Ridge Mountains region, featuring Watauga Lake, Wilbur Reservoir, and the Cherokee National Forest.

Established in 1796, the county takes its name from Landon Carter, an early settler who participated in the Lost State of Franklin movement.

The county maintains strong connections to its democratic roots through the Watauga Association, which established majority-rule governance in 1772.

Visitors access numerous hiking paths, camping locations, and water activities at Watauga Lake through the official website tourcartercounty.com.

The county contains Roan Mountain, which stands as Tennessee's highest elevation point outside the Great Smoky Mountains range.
