Murray Hill, Residential neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, United States

Murray Hill stretches between Fifth Avenue and the East River from East 34th Street to East 42nd Street. The neighborhood shows a mix of historic townhouses with brownstone facades and modern residential towers made of glass and steel.

Robert Murray acquired the hillside land during the 1750s and built a country estate called Inclenberg. His wife Mary later served tea to British officers during the Revolution to delay their troops and give American soldiers time to escape.

The district sits a short walk from the United Nations and hosts several diplomatic missions from different countries. This international character appears in small restaurants and shops that represent different culinary traditions.

Grand Central Terminal at the western edge offers access to several subway lines and commuter trains. Most streets run quiet with less traffic than other parts of Midtown Manhattan.

The Morgan Library stands at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 36th Street in a former private building. The library was originally built to house the personal collection of J. Pierpont Morgan.
