Singer Building, Demolished skyscraper in Financial District, Manhattan, US
The Singer Building stood at 187 meters with 47 floors, featuring a red brick facade, light-colored stone, and decorative terracotta elements at Broadway and Liberty Street.
The Singer Manufacturing Company initiated construction in 1906, and the building opened in 1908 as the tallest structure in the world until 1909.
The building design influenced New York City zoning regulations that aimed to maintain sunlight access to streets, affecting future skyscraper construction patterns.
The narrow tower design with limited floor space led to decreased profitability, resulting in the Singer Company relocating their operations in 1961.
The Singer Building remains the tallest building intentionally demolished, replaced by One Liberty Plaza between 1967 and 1969 despite preservation efforts.
