3 World Trade Center, Modern skyscraper in Financial District, Manhattan, United States
3 World Trade Center is a 328.9-meter (1079-foot) glass tower on Greenwich Street in Manhattan's Financial District. The 69-story structure shows an external steel framework with visible diagonal braces that give the building its geometric shape.
Construction started in March 2010 as part of the rebuilding effort after the September 11, 2001 events. Architect Richard Rogers designed the tower with an open floor plan that supported the urban renewal of the neighborhood.
The name connects the tower to the rebuilding of the neighborhood after 2001, while the transparent glass facade reflects the open spirit of the city. Visitors notice the exposed steel frame, which recalls early Manhattan high-rise construction and makes engineering visible.
The tower houses mainly offices and is not open to the public, so visitors can only view the building from outside. The best views are available from across the street or from elevated points in the Financial District.
The diamond-shaped steel frame on the outside allows continuous window surfaces without interior support columns, keeping the spaces open. This method transfers the load to the outer shell and makes the load-bearing system readable from the street.
