La Plata Lake, lake in Puerto Rico
La Plata Lake is a man-made freshwater reservoir in Puerto Rico surrounded by green hills and mountains, with calm water that extends across more than a square mile. The lake supplies drinking water to nearby towns and features a natural refuge where various fish species, birds, turtles, and iguanas inhabit the shoreline and surrounding forests.
The reservoir was built in 1973 to provide drinking water supply for nearby communities. Since its creation, it has remained a critical infrastructure for regional water supply while gradually becoming valued as a recreational destination.
The lake serves as a weekend gathering place where local families and groups come to fish or have picnics together. It functions as a community space where people connect with each other while enjoying the outdoors and natural surroundings.
The area is open Wednesday through Sunday from early morning to late afternoon with free parking and no entrance fee. Covered tables with grills, restrooms, and showers are available on site, though facilities may occasionally be closed.
Boat tours guided by Captain Carlos, known as CJ, offer smooth rides on a covered pontoon boat where wave-free travel allows clear viewing of wildlife and scenery. Tours range from 25 minutes to over two hours and include complimentary water and beverages, with advance booking recommended during busy periods.
