Oakland University, Public university in Rochester Hills, United States.
Oakland University is a public institution of higher learning in Rochester Hills, Michigan, offering more than one hundred bachelor's and master's programs in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The grounds include lecture halls, laboratory buildings, dormitories, sports facilities, and a cultural center, spread across a large campus on the edge of the city.
The university began teaching in 1959 after Matilda Dodge Wilson and her husband Alfred Wilson donated their land to create a new institution of higher education for the region. Initially operated as a branch of Michigan State University, it became independent in 1970 and has carried the name Oakland University since then.
The campus is home to the Meadow Brook Theatre, one of the few professional theater companies at an American university, which stages plays and musicals for the public. The theatre presents productions during the season in a historic building that was part of the original estate and still serves as a performance venue today.
The university is located north of Detroit and can be reached via Interstate 75 and local roads, with parking areas on the grounds for visitors. The campus is open to the public and hosts a range of events, guided tours, and exhibitions throughout the year.
The campus contains two golf courses that were once part of the Wilson family's private estate and are now used by golfers from the region. The courses wind through the university grounds and offer students as well as the public access to professional golfing facilities amid the academic setting.
