Driftwood, unincorporated community in Hays County, Texas

Driftwood is a small unincorporated community in Hays County, Texas, located roughly 17 miles northwest of San Marcos. The place comprises a handful of structures scattered across open land with the characteristic appearance of the Texas Hill Country landscape.

Early settlers arrived in the 1850s when the area was called Liberty Hill, and the community expanded during the 1880s with the arrival of railroad connections. By 1890 the place had a post office, schools, churches, and a cotton gin, functioning as a supply hub for surrounding ranches and farms.

The name Driftwood has no documented origin story, and residents use this space as a quiet everyday gathering place centered around simple community life. The few preserved buildings like the old lodge and cemetery remain active focal points where local traditions continue.

The small community sits roughly 17 miles northwest of San Marcos and is easily accessible from larger towns in the area. A visit works well as a brief stop to walk around open land and see a few remaining historic buildings and the old cemetery.

The name Driftwood has no documented origin story, remaining a mystery among local historians and researchers. Despite this uncertainty, residents and visitors have used the name for over a century without ever discovering its true source.
