Brownsville, Residential neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn, United States.

Brownsville is a residential district in the eastern part of Brooklyn, New York, covering roughly 1.2 square miles (about 3 square kilometers). The streets run between multistory apartment buildings, many of which belong to public housing complexes that give the area its dense appearance and shape daily life for residents.

The area was founded in 1858 and developed as a settlement for Jewish factory workers employed in nearby workshops. The 1950s brought a shift as African American families moved into the district and the makeup of the population changed fundamentally.

The name comes from Charles S. Brown, who developed the area in the mid-1800s and whose family sold lots for many years. Today the streets show rows of brick buildings from the 1950s and 1960s that define the look of the area and serve as home for families living here.

You can reach the area using several subway lines, including the New Lots Line and the Canarsie Line, which run regularly through the district. If you walk around, follow the main avenues that run in a grid pattern through the housing blocks and make it easier to find your way.

About one third of the housing units here belong to public projects, making this one of the highest concentrations of such buildings in the United States. This density shapes not only the skyline but also the social fabric and daily interactions in this part of Brooklyn.
