University Heights, city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States
University Heights is a small city in Cuyahoga County, located just east of Cleveland in the Greater Cleveland area. It is made up mainly of residential streets lined with single-family homes, small parks, and a handful of local shops and restaurants.
The area was once part of Warrensville Township and known as Idlewood Village before it became a city in 1940. The name changed to reflect the nearby presence of John Carroll University, which had moved to the area a few years earlier.
University Heights takes its name from John Carroll University, a Jesuit school whose campus sits at the edge of the city. Students and faculty move through the neighborhood regularly, giving the streets a calm academic feel that sets it apart from other suburbs nearby.
The city is easiest to get around by car, as it is a suburban area with straightforward streets and plentiful street parking. Public bus connections link it to central Cleveland for those who prefer not to drive.
Under the streets, Dugway Brook runs in two branches that were buried underground as the land was developed over the decades. In a few spots, you can still hear water moving beneath the pavement, a quiet hint of the original landscape that lies below the city.
