Peace Candle, Civil War memorial monument in Centre Square, Easton, US
The Peace Candle is an illuminated structure in Centre Square, Easton, that is assembled each winter season. It features a main candle rising above the square alongside four smaller candles, creating a glowing display visible throughout the downtown area.
This memorial concept began in 1951 from a community member's suggestion and has evolved through several reconstructions since then. The current design dates to 1990, representing the latest interpretation of the original vision.
This illuminated structure transforms the Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument into a symbol honoring military service members from all backgrounds. The display reflects the community's commitment to remembering those who served.
The structure is assembled starting in mid-November with the lighting ceremony happening around Thanksgiving weekend. It remains on display throughout the winter months before being taken down in early February.
The finished structure weighs several tons and is built from marine-grade plywood and galvanized steel materials. Its annual assembly relies on volunteers and local trade unions who donate their skills and equipment to build it each year.
