Middlesboro crater, Impact crater in Bell County, Kentucky, United States

The Middlesboro crater is an impact basin roughly 6 kilometers wide, marked by layers of sedimentary rock, and the entire city of Middlesboro sits within its boundaries. The interior structure displays the typical features you would see in a meteorite impact site, with complex geological formations throughout.

Geologists discovered the impact structure in the 1960s through surveys and scientific study of rock formations and patterns. Later investigations confirmed the meteorite origin by finding evidence in the shocked rocks and distinctive fracture marks throughout the basin.

The bowl-shaped depression has shaped where people built their community, with Middlesboro sitting at the center of this ancient impact zone. Residents have adapted to living in this unusual geological location over many generations.

Visit when weather is dry to easily access trails and viewpoints throughout the area. Bring comfortable walking shoes since the ground is uneven and exploration involves walking longer distances.

This site is globally one of a kind because coal mining actually happens here, making it the only known place on Earth where mining operations occur within a meteorite impact structure. The blend of ancient cosmic history and active industry in one location makes it truly unusual.
