Western Kentucky University is a state-funded institution on a hilltop in Bowling Green covering 200 acres and including lecture halls, laboratories, and residence buildings. The institution began in 1906 as a teacher training school and gained its current status as a full university in 1966 after several intermediate stages. Over the 20th century the campus expanded from the original main building to a sprawling complex with dozens of structures.

The Mahurin Honors College was the first standalone program of its kind in Kentucky and now supports over 1,300 students in advanced coursework. The partnership with the University of Akureyri in Iceland focuses on joint research into climate change and Arctic ecosystems.
