Maker's Mark is a whiskey distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, that uses winter wheat instead of rye in its bourbon recipe. This ingredient gives the spirit a milder taste than many other bourbons from the region.
Samuel Samuels founded the distillery in 1889 on Star Hill Farm in central Kentucky. The property later received Kentucky Historic Landmark status and was added to the National Register.
Workers dip each bottle by hand into warm red wax at the end of the production line. Visitors can watch this process and see the wax cooling into its irregular shape on the glass.
Tours run daily and last about an hour, with the final group departing in mid-afternoon. The route leads through production buildings and ends in the tasting room.
The on-site restaurant Star Hill Provisions serves regional dishes from Kentucky using ingredients from nearby farms. The menu changes with the seasons and follows what local growers harvest.
