Pomeroy

Pomeroy is the county seat of Meigs County, stretching along the banks of the Ohio River with commercial buildings following the waterway's natural curve. The settlement rises steeply from the river, creating a narrow ribbon of development framed by hillsides.

The town began in the 1830s when Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy established a trading company that sparked economic growth. Coal mining and river commerce became the foundation of local life, shaping the community for generations.

The village hosts several annual celebrations at the levee featuring local food vendors and live music. These gatherings reflect how much the community values its riverside location and shared traditions.

The courthouse has three floors with separate ground-level entrances on each level, reflecting the steep terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are essential since streets climb sharply from the river, making exploration on foot more manageable.

A local fast-food restaurant served pizza until 2017, making it one of the last locations worldwide to offer this item. The story reflects how small towns sometimes develop their own food traditions separate from national chains.
