Rock Creek Park, Urban park in Northwest Washington D.C., United States.
Rock Creek Park is a wooded area in Northwest Washington that extends along a river valley over more than 1,700 acres (690 hectares). The grounds offer sports fields, tennis facilities, a golf course, and numerous hiking trails among gentle hills.
Congress created this park in 1890 as the third national protected area and first natural recreation space within an American city. The decision aimed to give citizens access to undisturbed nature without leaving the city.
The name comes from a small stream that flows through the valley and once powered several mills. Walkers today follow narrow paths through dense forest, while riders explore the hilly terrain on dedicated trails.
On weekends, authorities close certain road sections to cars, giving cyclists and runners open space. Visitors reach starting points for hikes through several entrances along the park boundaries.
A riding program at the Horse Center has worked with veterans and people with special needs since the early 1970s. The therapy uses the connection between human and horse to support healing and trust.
