Crown Heights, Residential neighborhood in Brooklyn, US

Crown Heights is a residential neighborhood in central Brooklyn, running roughly from Prospect Park on the west to Ralph Avenue on the east. Its streets are lined with brick row houses and older apartment buildings, broken up by commercial strips such as Nostrand Avenue and Franklin Avenue.

Crown Heights began to take shape in the early 1900s when streetcar and subway lines connected it to the rest of Brooklyn and drew in new residents. Developers quickly filled the land with brick row houses and apartment buildings, most of which still stand today.

The Caribbean presence in Crown Heights is felt most along Nostrand Avenue, where grocery stores, barbershops, and restaurants from Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados sit side by side. A few blocks west, synagogues and kosher shops along Kingston Avenue reflect the neighborhood's long-standing Jewish community.

Several subway lines stop in Crown Heights, making it straightforward to reach from Manhattan or other parts of Brooklyn. The flat streets are easy to walk, and most points of interest are within a short distance of each other.

Eastern Parkway, which runs through Crown Heights, was the first parkway of its kind in the United States when it was completed in 1874. The design served as a model for similar roads built in other American cities afterward.
