St. Meinrad Archabbey, Benedictine monastery and Catholic seminary in Spencer County, United States
St. Meinrad Archabbey is a Benedictine monastery and Catholic seminary located across multiple buildings on expansive grounds in Spencer County. About 79 monks live here following the Rule of Saint Benedict while offering graduate-level theological education to students.
Swiss monks from Einsiedeln Abbey founded this monastery in 1854, making it one of the earliest Catholic seminaries in the United States. This Swiss connection shaped its spiritual practices from the beginning.
The monastery holds five daily prayer sessions featuring Gregorian chant that echoes through the stone buildings. These liturgical practices shape the rhythm of life here and show how ancient traditions structure each day.
The grounds are spread across multiple areas, so allow time to walk between the various buildings and explore the layout. Keep in mind this is an active monastery with students and daily routines, so visiting with respect for the community is important.
The monastery operates Abbey Caskets, where handcrafted wooden caskets and cremation urns are made. This unusual work helps fund the monastery's educational and religious programs.
