The USS Manta measures 311 feet in length with a displacement capacity of 1,526 tons surfaced and 2,424 tons when submerged.
Commissioned in December 1944, the Balao-class submarine operated during World War II and participated in two patrols near the Kurile Islands in 1945.
The submarine received multiple military decorations, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
After decommissioning, the vessel functioned as a target ship for experimental antisubmarine warfare projects of the Atlantic Fleet Operational Development Force.
The submarine ended its service on July 16, 1969, when it was deliberately sunk off the Virginia coast to serve as a target for aircraft training.
