Castle Hill, Residential neighborhood in The Bronx, United States
Castle Hill is a residential neighborhood in the Bronx that stretches from Waterbury and Westchester Avenues in the north to the East River in the south. The area combines apartment buildings, homes, and local shops mixed throughout.
The area developed from empty land into a place for European immigrants fleeing Manhattan, and later housed World War II veterans in temporary structures. A major housing project in the 1950s marked a turning point for the neighborhood.
The neighborhood reflects the daily life of Latin American and African American communities, with Puerto Rican and Dominican shops and restaurants shaping the local character.
The area is well connected by public transit, especially through the IRT Pelham Line on Westchester Avenue, which links to other parts of the city. The Shops at Bruckner Commons offers stores for daily needs.
The Castle Hill Houses project from 1959 transformed the neighborhood with over 2,000 new housing units built by the New York City Housing Authority. This large project brought people from many backgrounds to the area and shaped the way it looks today.
