Tavern on the Green, Restaurant in Central Park, US
Tavern on the Green is a restaurant in a stone building near West 66th Street in Manhattan, with glass-enclosed dining rooms overlooking Central Park gardens. The interior spreads across several levels, including a courtyard with trees and a large hall with chandeliers.
The building was erected in 1870 as a sheepfold for animals grazing on Sheep Meadow in the park. In 1934 the city converted the structure into a restaurant, which has been renovated several times since.
The name recalls the old green at the park entrance where visitors once gathered before entering the grounds. Today the venue draws guests from across the city, especially for Sunday brunch and celebrations overlooking the garden spaces.
A reservation is necessary, especially on weekends and holidays when the venue often fills up. Attire should be neat, but jacket and tie are not required.
After closing in 2009, legal disputes arose over the name, which the City of New York ultimately retained for future operators. The venue reopened in 2014 under new management but kept the historic designation.
