26 Journal Square, Skyscraper and historic office building at Journal Square, Jersey City, United States
26 Journal Square is a 15-story Beaux-Arts office tower in the heart of Jersey City, New Jersey. It is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, combining a detailed historic facade with updated office interiors.
The tower was built in 1928 as the Labor Bank Building, during a period when Jersey City was expanding upward and the Journal Square area was growing into a regional center. Over the following decades it changed names and tenants several times before receiving its historic designations.
The building is known today by its street address, but locals and historians still refer to it by its original name. It sits at the center of Journal Square, a busy transit hub where commuters, workers, and residents cross paths every day.
The building stands directly across from the Journal Square PATH station, so it is easy to reach by train from Manhattan or other parts of Jersey City. Those interested in seeing the interior should contact the building management in advance, as access is limited to tenants and their guests.
Inside the building, a former bank vault has been converted into a co-working and event space called The Vault, with the original steel doors and thick walls still in place. It is an unusual find in an office tower and gives a concrete sense of the building's banking past.
