ANTA Washington Square Theatre, Theatre in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, United States.
ANTA Washington Square Theatre was a playhouse in Greenwich Village with a tilted stage platform and seating arranged on three sides of the playing space. The 1,158 seats offered an unusually close relationship between audience and performers.
The theatre opened in 1963 as the initial home for the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center before that company relocated to the Vivian Beaumont Theater in 1965. The venue closed permanently in 1968.
The theatre presented numerous productions including Arthur Miller's plays and Eugene O'Neill's Marco Millions between 1964 and 1968.
The venue was located at 40 West Fourth Street in the heart of Greenwich Village near other cultural destinations. Visitors should note that this theater no longer operates, having closed over 50 years ago.
The musical Man of La Mancha played here starting in November 1965 before moving to another theatre. The show ran long enough at this location to become a major success in New York.
