Bellevue Standpipe, Historic water tank in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, US.
The Bellevue Standpipe is a water storage tank on a hilltop in West Roxbury with a height of about 114 feet (35 meters) and a diameter of about 47 feet (14 meters). The exterior shows rough-cut granite over concrete construction, appearing solid and functional.
The tank was built in 1914 by the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board to replace an older structure from 1888. This change came from the need to keep pace with the city's growing water demands.
The structure displays the mark of early municipal planning and has become part of the local landscape of West Roxbury. Visitors can see how engineering and architecture come together to create a functioning landmark.
The tank sits at the northern end of Stony Brook Reservation and is surrounded by green space. The location is easy to reach on foot but offers limited parking directly at the site.
The standpipe sits at about 330 feet (100 meters) above sea level on Bellevue Hill, the highest elevation in Boston. This commanding position allowed water to be distributed by gravity across many neighborhoods.
