Birch Coulee Battlefield, Historic battlefield in Morton, United States.
Birch Coulee Battlefield is a historic site in Renville County that spans open prairie with a steep wooded ravine running along its eastern side toward the Minnesota River. Marked trails and interpretive stations guide visitors through the landscape and help them understand where key moments of the conflict took place.
In September 1862, soldiers stationed here experienced a lengthy siege by Dakota forces that resulted in combat casualties and many wounded among the troops. This fight was part of the larger conflicts that shaped the region during this era.
Interpretive signs across the grounds explain the battle from both U.S. military and Dakota viewpoints, making multiple perspectives on the conflict visible to visitors. This approach helps people understand what the engagement meant to different groups of people.
The site is freely accessible year-round and can be explored at your own pace using the marked trails throughout the grounds. The warmer months are the most comfortable time to visit and walk the open prairie.
The fighting here was notable for the heavy loss of animals, with many horses dying during the battle. Troops then used the fallen animals as protective barriers against incoming attacks.
