Burlington Headquarters Building, commercieel gebouw in de Verenigde Staten
The Burlington Headquarters Building is a commercial structure in the Italianate style built in 1879 on South 10th Street in Omaha. It originally had three floors, was expanded with an additional floor in 1886, and was renovated in 1899 with a large interior light court topped by a pyramid-shaped skylight that fills the interior with natural light.
The structure was designed in 1879 by architect A. R. Dufrene and served as headquarters for the Burlington and Missouri Railroad Company during its rapid expansion. The railroad grew from nearly 2,000 miles of track in 1887 to four times that by 1901, connecting Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and beyond.
The building served as headquarters for the Burlington and Missouri Railroad Company, a business that shaped Omaha's growth and the entire Midwest region. It stands as a reminder of when railroads defined the city's economic life and daily rhythms.
The building is located in downtown Omaha and is visible from the street, but it is not open to the public. Visitors can admire the historic facade with its characteristic features and decorative cornice from the exterior.
Inside sits a large light court measuring roughly 41 by 43 feet and topped by a pyramid-shaped skylight that brings natural light to the otherwise dark interior. This renovation added in 1899 was an innovative design for the time and keeps the building's interior bright and open today.
