Calamus Swamp

Calamus Swamp, Protected wetland near Circleville, Ohio, United States

Description

Calamus Swamp is a protected wetland near Circleville containing a natural kettle lake that covers approximately 19 acres. The site features various tree species including American Elm, Green Ash, Red Maple, and Silver Maple that surround the water body.

History

The kettle lake basin formed during the last ice age when a detached piece of glacier melted in place, leaving behind this distinctive depression in central Ohio. This glacial origin makes the lake a rare geological feature in the region.

Culture

Columbus Audubon manages this preserve as a place where visitors can observe native plants and watch different bird species in their natural setting. The site helps the local community understand the importance of wetlands and their role in supporting wildlife.

Practical

A wooden boardwalk circles part of the wetland, offering visitors easy access to watch waterfowl, amphibians, and various insects. The path provides a comfortable way to explore the site and observe wildlife without disturbing the natural environment.

Did you know?

This preserve contains the only naturally vegetated and undisturbed kettle lake remaining in central Ohio, supporting rare species like Tiger Salamanders. This intactness makes it valuable for research and protection of this special ecosystem.
