Caltrain Centralized Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility

Caltrain Centralized Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility is the main railroad workshop in San Jose where regional commuter trains receive maintenance and repairs. The complex contains service bays, administrative buildings, and an automated washing system that keeps the fleet running daily.

The facility opened in 2007 and replaced an older maintenance yard that had served Southern Pacific Railroad operations at the same location. It was designed as a modern center for regional rail infrastructure support.

The facility employs 150 staff members working across three shifts, maintaining the railroad infrastructure that connects San Francisco to Gilroy communities.

The facility is visible from outside but access to the workshop areas is restricted to authorized personnel only. Plan your visit during quieter times when train movements are less frequent.

An underground tunnel connects different parts of the facility, allowing workers to move safely between workshops without stepping onto active train tracks. This hidden passage shapes how the site operates day to day but remains invisible to outside observers.
